Latin Name: Pinus radiata
Description: Accoya® is radiata pine which has been modified at a molecular level through an acetylation process to permanently change the chemical structure of the timber. The acetylation process in entirely non-toxic and introduces no chemicals not already found in the wood and modifies the timber from the surface to the core. The result of this modification is to produce a timber which has class 1 durability and is extremely dimensionally stable.

Working Properties: The timber machines very well and does not require special tooling. The timber can be corrosive towards some metals so care must be taken when selecting fixings and hardware to be used with Accoya® as too the type of glue used when joining. When decorating the timber care should again be taken when selecting the correct coatings to be used with Accoya® and if a stained finish is required further planing can be required to remove stick marks.
Uses: Windows and doors and joinery. Cladding, soffits, facias. Decking, outdoor furniture and equipment. Kitchen doors.

Latin Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii
Description: The sapwood is lighter in colour from the heartwood which varies from a decided yellow tinge to a reddish-brown colour. There is a pronounced difference in colour between early-wood and late-wood zones which gives the wood a very distinctive figure on plain-sawn surfaces. The wood is generally straight grained.

Working Properties: The timber works readily and fairly easily. It can be nailed, screwed, glued, stained and polished satisfactorily. The timber has a strong tendency to split.
Uses: Windows and doors and joinery. Larger constructional grades used for harbour and dock work,construction and piling.

Latin Name: Larix decidua
Description: The heartwood is pale reddish-brown sharply defined from the lighter coloured sapwood. It is a very resinous wood, with clearly marked annual rings, straight grain and a fine, uniform texture. Knots commonly split and loosen with drying.

Durability: Moderately durable
Moisture Movement: Medium
Working Properties: The timber saws and machines fairly well but loosened knots may be problematic. The wood tends to split with nailing.
Uses: Cladding and external construction.

Latin Name: Pinus sylvestris
Description: The heartwood is pale yellowish-brown to reddish-brown, resinous and usually distinct from the creamy white to yellow sapwood. The growth rings are clearly defined by the denser late-wood. The quality of the timber is affected by conditions of growth, climate, soil etc. more than most timbers because of its wide and varying distribution and these factors affect the texture, density, size and number of knots.

Working Properties: The timber generally works well and is capable of a smooth clean finish but this is again dependant upon the number and size of knots and the resin present. It holds nails and screws well and can be stained, glued, varnished and painted satisfactorily.
Uses: Internal joinery and mouldings, construction work, furniture, flooring, windows and doors.

Latin Name: Pinus palustris
Description: The heartwood is yellowish-brown to a reddish brown with the sapwood being lighter in colour. The timber is resinous with the growth rings being well marked by the contrast between the light colour early-wood and the darker, dense late-wood. The texture is rather coarse.

Working Properties: The timber works moderately easily but the resin can clog saw teeth and cutters. A good finish is obtainable and the timber can be glued satisfactorily. It takes nails and screws well and gives a fair result with pain and other finishing treatments.
Uses: Internal joinery and mouldings. The wider widths available make it ideal for staircase work.

Latin Name: Thuja plicata
Description: The sapwood is narrow and white in colour, when freshly sawn or machined the heartwood is very varied in colour from pale almost white through pinkish salmon colour to dark red-brown. If left to naturally weather the material adopts a uniform silver-grey colour. The wood is non resinous, straight grained with a somewhat coarse texture.

Working Properties: The timber works easily and a good finish can be obtained providing cutters are kept sharp. Owing to its acidic properties it can react with ferrous metals leading to blue/black staining on the timber.
Uses: Shingles, weather boarding, greenhouses and external shiplaps and claddings.

Description: There is no difference by colour between sapwood and heartwood, the colour varying from almost white to pale yellowish-brown. It has straight grain and a rather fine texture.
